Elisa Pierandrei is an Italian journalist and author, and also a filmmaker. She began her career as a full-time staff journalist with the Italian news agency Adnkronos International in Rome in 2003. Until 2008 she covered various topics, focusing on the socio-cultural aspects of the Middle East countries. She has then moved to Milan, where she currently lives. Recently her articles have appeared in the magazines of La Repubblica “d” and “dLui”, “Il Venerdì”, as well as online on “Al Jazeera English”, “Contemporary And”, “Al-Monitor,” and “The New Arab,” among others. Within this frame, her contributions range from researching to writing and reporting news stories across art, literature, and the visual media. Over the years, she has gained an interest in the Middle East, Africa, and the diaspora. She is also author of the books, 'Painting, Photography, Drawing. From Africa and its Diaspora' (Self Publisher, 2022), and 'Urban Cairo. La Primavera araba dei graffiti' (InformAnt | eBook Quotidiani editore, 2012 and 2014). Elisa Pierandrei holds a master's degree in Journalism and mass communication from the American University in Cairo (2002) after graduating in Arabic language and literature at the Ca' Foscari University in Venice (1998). Elisa Pierandrei co-authored, in collaboration with the photographer Loris Savino and the videomaker Marco di Noia, the short film “M.A.R.E., Storie di Mediterraneo, Arabi, Rivolte ed Europa,” about the mutated political situation along the borders of three countries of the Mare Nostrum, in early 2011 linked by a common destiny. She has extensively lived and travelled across the Arab region, and reported for various media on the wave of protests termed the 'Arab Spring'. Elisa Pierandrei is engaged in academic activities in collaboration with various institutions, such as the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) from 2014, and the University of Milan La Statale (from 2009 until 2020). • Reimagining Iraq's Marshes with photographer Tamara Abdul Hadi

By Elisa Pierandrei Verified| The New Arab Verified The fate of Iraq's Mesopotamian Marshes has always been closely linked to efforts to modernise the country, control its cities and rivers, exploit its oil resources, and industrialise its agriculture. Dams recently built by neighbouring countries at the sources of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have reduced the levels of fresh water flowing into Iraq, compromising the delicate ecosystem of that wetland region.
