Emilie Raguso launched The Berkeley Scanner in September 2022. She joined Berkeleyside in 2012 and covered politics, public safety and development until her departure in 2022. In 2017, Emilie was named Journalist of the Year by SPJ NorCal. In 2021, she won SPJ NorCal's longform journalism award (print, small division) for her investigation into the death of Gulf War veteran Michael Hermon after he was attacked at Santa Rita Jail. Her reporting on homelessness has also been recognized by SPJ NorCal, and she has been part of Berkeleyside teams to win Community Journalism awards from SPJ NorCal three times. Emilie previously launched and ran beloved community news site Albany Patch.

Someone called 911 shortly after 3 a.m. to report a couch on fire outside the building, at 1939 Addison St. west of Milvia Street, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner. The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. near the Amtrak station, which is located at 700 University Ave. west of Fourth Street. Authorities said witnesses saw the man get run over. The train conductor reported the incident to police. "He is alive but needs help," a dispatcher reported over the radio.

Authorities sent out a Nixle alert just before 12:30 p.m. to announce the discovery, which officers found in the area of Sunday morning's police shooting, which left a man in critical condition.
