  • Character is what makes America great | Eric Frydenlund

By Eric Frydenlund| Wisconsin State Journal Verified PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — When I was a page in the Wisconsin Assembly in the 1970s, politics was adversarial but not as mean-spirited as today. Legislators fought rhetorically on the Assembly floor, but members still managed to share conversation over a beer and burger after-hours. I remember taking Rep. John Gower, R-Green Bay, to the airport. He was a pilot, and when he found out I had never been on a plane, he offered me a quick tour of the skies above Madison. It was a kind gesture I never forgot.

  • Frydenlund: Seeds of stories planted on such a winter's day

By Eric Frydenlund| Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, Iowa) Verified It’s a balmy six degrees today after bottoming out at minus five during the night. The arctic weather does not deter me from taking Gil for a walk at the park. Perhaps it should. I meet a neighbor there walking her dog, and she observes, “We must be dedicated dog walkers.” “No,” I said, “we’re just crazy.”On a similarly frigid day a few weeks ago, I decided to take my long walk, the one usually reserved for summer. This hike takes me by a limestone gulch, which I wrote about in a column last year.
