With a little bit of training, I know I could complete one 30-mile lap in the gravel race—I consistently ride around 19 miles on Fort Ord National Monument. Getting a top time is out of the question, as is anything more than a lap, but that wouldn’t be my goal.
By Erik Chalhoub Verified| Monterey County Now Verified About a month before the Life Time Sea Otter Classic made its return for 2025, race director Jeff Frost said the event was well on its way to have its “biggest year ever” in terms of registered athletes. He was right. The amateur gravel race on Friday, April 11 saw a record number of participating riders at more than 700, a 35 percent increase over 2024’s numbers, according to event organizers.

I often frequent the trails by bike at Fort Ord National Monument and Wilder Ranch State Park in Santa Cruz, and I’ve always noted just how better maintained the trails are at the former compared to the latter. Even more impressive is the fact that Fort Ord has more than double the mileage of trails compared to Wilder Ranch: 86 versus 35.
