  • Intraspecific predator interference promotes biodiversity in ecosystems

By Ju Eun Kang, Shijie Zhang, Yiyuan Niu, Fan Zhong| eLife@ eLife assessment This manuscript is an important contribution, assessing the role of intraspecific consumer interference in maintaining diversity using a mathematical model. Consistent with long-standing ecological theory, the authors convincingly show that predator interference allows for the coexistence of multiple species on a single resource, beyond the competitive exclusion principle. Notably, the model matches observed rank-abundance curves in several natural ecosystems.
