The bricks are a remnant of the city’s street car system which operated from 1891 to 1938, according to Whatcom County historian Jeff Jewell. Originally, Harris Avenue was a wooden plank street. Although discussions about paving it began as early as 1906, it wasn’t until 1915 that Harris was fully paved between 4th and 14th streets.
