Biography

I'm a journalist, part-time university lecturer and freelance editor and copywriter. My byline appears in all manner of places including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, the ABC online and lots of good magazines in Australia and internationally. I love working with academics, researchers and scientists to bring complex and interesting new breakthroughs to a general audience. I'm adept at translating grant application text and journal articles into interesting features that non-specialists can understand. Currently I'm a part-time reporter for 'Lighthouse,' Macquarie University's news site which features academic research and expert insights into current news events. I write feature articles and profiles across a very wide range of topics, including technology, business, health, science, education, photography, law, food and 'lifestyle.' I am an elected as Federal Councillor for the Media section of Australia's professional body for journalists, the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, and an occasional judge on the Walkley Awards freelance category. I'm the founder and moderator of Freeline (the Australian freelance journalists network) and part of the founding committee for the Science Journalists Association of Australia and I'm also a member of the Society for Environmental Journalists. I have worked variously as a radio, magazine, newspaper and online journalist in some of Australia's leading outlets. I’ve been freelance for nearly 20 years now and I still love it.
