Born in Detroit, Michigan, raised in the Silicon Valley, I got my start as a copy boy in the late 1980s. I've been working as a newspaper reporter and editor in Los Angeles since 1989. I've covered fires, floods, earthquakes, political conventions, the murder trial of OJ Simpson, professional sports and crime, courts and cops. See for yourself. It almost looks real. Until the “bear” attempts to climb into the back seat of the 2010 Rolls Royce Ghost. The California Department of Insurance announced Wednesday the arrests of four people suspected of insurance fraud by claiming a bear had caused damage to their vehicles, but it was actually a person in a bear costume.

  • Moneyball no more

    By Frank Girardot| Substack@ I didn’t think I would be emotional, but seeing the A’s play their final game two weeks ago at the Oakland Coliseum was pretty damn sad. Most among the crowd of 46,000 (including me) uncontrollably shed many many tears. As if adding insult to injury the team ownership created a Hunger Games scenario of sorts forcing fans into a livestock funnel for the opportunity to grab a poorly constructed souvenir replica of the Coliseum that looks more like an ashtray than anything else.
