Biography
This was not the plan. In college and after graduation, after hitchhiking through Europe, after filling notebooks with observations, descriptions and characters, all to be glorified in a sweeping novel about life, passion and Marx Brothers lines, the plan was novelist, playwright, bon vivant. Instead Aunt Betty called my mother and said The Daily Journal was looking for writers. What's a Daily Journal was what came out of my mouth. The first of a million insightful questions I would go on to ask in my journalism career. It's a career that took me from the New Jersey governor's mansion to the gritty side streets of Elizabeth, NJ. Then from Midtown Manhattan to France, the Caribbean and Canada. Back to NJ. Then to Colorado and finally, you guessed it, back to New Jersey. To quote Michael Corleone in Godfather III: "Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in." And after 11 years at the helm of the venerable Record in Bergen County, I went national with Digital First Media and its Thunderdome project, a joint digital/print effort to rethink how journalism could thrive. Three years later, I returned to my real love - investigative journalism with Gannett in New York, where I toil today in an effort to expose the bad stuff and create new good stuff.
I do not cover anything food or survey/date-related.
