  • From the Easy Chair: 1972 Vikings still hold one record 53 years later

By Franklin Davis Verified| The News Reporter (Whiteville, NC) Verified On April 5, 1972, the West Columbus Vikings baseball team defeated Green Sea 51–2. The Vikings’ 51 runs broke the NCHSAA single-game record of 49 runs scored by Bethany in a 49–3 win over Asheville McGuiness in 1967. The 53 total runs also broke the combined runs scored in one game set in the Bethany versus Asheville McGuiness contest. Perquimans would top the West Columbus total in a 52–1 win over Cape Hatteras on April 16, 2015.

  • Stallions sweep Vikings, Wolfpack baseball and soccer rebound on Friday

By Franklin Davis Verified| The News Reporter (Whiteville, NC) Verified There are a couple of things that the Waccamaw Conference scheduling format of playing the same opponent twice in one week brings about. And two, the Tuesday winner doesn’t get much time to celebrate a victory over a despised rival before taking the field against them on Friday. South Columbus ended the week 6–0 versus West Columbus, with a pair of wins in baseball, women’s soccer and softball.
