Biography
My family moved from Puerto Rico to Colorado when I was in the third grade and I've been obsessed with understanding how people fit into the spaces around them ever since. Now, I write about what it means to be Latinx in the United States (Reggaeton is universal! Spanish is not!) and how women are coping with and transforming the society we live in. After graduating with degrees in political science and journalism from the University of Colorado, I moved to New York City to intern at The Nation. I received an even more valuable education in shoeleather daily reporting as the Upper East Side beat reporter at DNAinfo. From there I moved on to the New York Daily News where I fell in love with writing old-school, New York-style headlines. After watching too many episodes of The West Wing, I felt inspired to pursue more political journalism and wound up at The American Prospect and then, MSNBC. The effect of having worked at daily tabloids as well as political magazines was for me to favor the kind of journalism that relies on solid reporting in order to illuminate a broader point. For example, profiling a young public defender who fought against a dress code she felt was sexist and prevented her from representing her client. Or, speaking to domestic workers--mostly working-class women of color--organizing for workplace protections. My job is to write about the people who are here, too.
Broadly: I write about politics and culture from the lens of women and Latinx. So I write about film activism social trends and legislation. music
I don't cover day-to-day politics or crime.
