Biography

With over a decade of professional journalism experience, I'm a freelance journalist specialising in features, op eds and interviews. My interviewees have included former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and actor Sir Ian McKellen. For over five years, I've written for Fairfax's online network (Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Canberra Times, Brisbane Times) - mainly for their 'Executive Style' section, aimed at men. I now also write regular features and op eds for News Corp mastheads (Daily Telegraph, news.com.au, Rendez View) and for the New Daily. I previously wrote a regular monthly column for the UK Guardian's 'Mind your language' section, which featured on the Guardian's network homepage on the last Friday of every month. http://www.theguardian.com/profile/garynunn Now I write regular language-themed pieces for the Oxford Dictionaries blog: https://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/author/gary-nunn/ I've written for newspapers, magazines and websites in the UK and Australia including The New Statesman, The Independent, The Big Issue (UK) and Fairfax, News Corp and the New Daily, the Australian Women's Weekly (Australia). I started my career as a journalist writing for the Kent Messenger Group newspapers in 1999. In the very beginning, I had a regular community news column covering issues such as lost cats or, on one particularly fast-paced news day, a lost parrot. These days I'm more likely to write about oxymorons, onomatopoeia, or the Oxford comma. Issues I cover for op eds (for The Guardian and The Sydney Morning Herald) include politics, social affairs, equality, gay, lesbian and bisexual issues, feminism, social mobility, the not-for-profit sector, Africa, cycling issues and, of course, my favourite: language issues. I've also worked in PR and Communications since 2005, most recently as Director of Communications for Change.org Australia (2015 - 2017).
