The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) is a UK-based independent not-for-profit organization established in 1998. Its mission is to promote fundamental human rights and ethical labor standards in global supply chains. ETI was formed by a coalition of companies, trade unions, and NGOs in response to concerns about poor working conditions, particularly in the garment manufacturing industry. ETI operates as a collaborative alliance, bringing together diverse members to drive improvements in labor practices worldwide. It has developed the ETI Base Code, which outlines minimum ethical standards for labor practices, including fair wages and health and safety. ETI facilitates collective action among its members to address systemic supply chain issues and influences policy frameworks that support responsible business conduct. The organization also emphasizes transparency, requiring members to publish their Tier 1 suppliers and report on their progress in improving labor practices. With around 90 company members employing approximately 10 million workers globally, ETI is dedicated to fostering ethical trade and protecting workers' rights.
