Biography

Gordon Douglas is a writer, researcher, photographer, and lecturer whose work sits at the intersection of urban culture, policy, and design. As a postdoctoral fellow and associate director at NYU's Institute for Public Knowledge, he is part of a research team examining New York's response to Hurricane Sandy at the local and institutional levels, as well as new initiatives around gentrification and displacement, ethnography and journalism, and race and public sphere. In 2017 he will join the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at San José State University as an assistant professor. Gordon writes on a variety of issues concerning cultural identity, urban planning and development, and people’s interactions with the natural and built environment. His forthcoming book on “do-it-yourself urban design” concerns the people who create these unauthorized public space interventions and the persistence of social and spatial inequality even in ostensibly progressive and populist "creative placemaking." Gordon’s work seeks to inform how and for whom our cities are organized, designed, and understood. His articles and photographs have appeared in Architect, GOOD, Urban Studies, City & Community, the Journal of Urban Design, Sociological Perspectives, and more. As a scholar he has been quoted in articles for The Atlantic, Fast Company, Outside, In These Times, and The Harvard Political Review. In 2012, Gordon also served on the curatorial team for Spontaneous Interventions: Design Actions for the Common Good, the U.S. exhibition at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale, for which he was also co-editor of the catalogue published by Architect magazine. Gordon has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago and also holds Masters degrees in Global Media from the London School of Economics and in Global Communication from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication. He got his Bachelors degree in International Relations from USC. Gordon was born in London, England, raised in Davis, California, and currently divides his time between New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
