Biography

Gordon Young is the author of Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City, a Michigan Notable Book for 2014 and a finalist for the 33rd Annual Northern California Book Award for Creative NonFiction. Filmmaker Michael Moore described Teardown as "a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city." His work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington City Paper, Slate, Utne Reader, San Jose Mercury-News, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and numerous other publications. He grew up in Flint, Michigan, the birthplace of General Motors, where his accomplishments included learning to parallel park the family’s massive Buick Electra 225. After reaching an uneasy truce with the nuns in the local Catholic school system, he went on to study journalism at the University of Missouri and English literature at the University of Nottingham. He is a senior lecturer in the Communication Department at Santa Clara University and lives in San Francisco with his wife and daughter.
