Alder Mike Verveer says in his 30-year tenure as a Madison alder, it's the largest deficit he's ever seen the city have to make up. Because the city is dealing with such a gap, meetings about the budget started much earlier this year. Budget talks usually start in late summer or early fall.

The lawsuit was filed by Gov. Tony Evers against Republican co-chair of the Joint Finance Committee, Sen. Howard Marklein. Evers is incredibly happy with the decision.
