It was also very close to the most disproportionate in the history of the western world. Labour gained a touch over one third of the votes but almost two-thirds of the seats. The Tories won just under a quarter of the votes but only 19% of the seats. Labour came out of the election with an almost unprecedented majority of 172 over all parties and 290 over the Tories.
