Biography
I write for publications big and small, here and overseas, in the process of writing the books that are my major passion. I'm interested in culture, religion, politics, literature, art, story, and I'm drawn to asking big questions and seeking some answers. I'm currently talking, thinking, and writing about my new book on racist mythologies and White Christian Nationalism for Oxford University Press. Recent and forthcoming books include my book on racism and Hollywood (A Long, Long Way from Oxford University Press) and on the wisdom of James Baldwin (The Gospel according to James Baldwin out Sept. 14 from Orbis Books) I'm a professor at Baylor University, where I teach classes on race and culture, literature, theology, and creative writing. I've spoken in venues ranging from Washington National Cathedral to the American Library in Paris, from Oxford, England to Oxford, Mississippi. I've appeared on (or in) NPR and Fox News, BBC Radio and USA Today, The New Statesman and Christianity Today, the New York Times and the LA Times, and on radio stations so small I may have been the only person listening to myself. All part of the job, right?
