Biography

I’ve written for some of the world’s leading publications, covering stories on human rights issues, conflict and politics and reporting from places as diverse as Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq, Bangladesh, Mali, Darfur and the Middle East. Along the way, I interviewed some key international figures, from Benjamin Netanyahu and Princess Anne to Zaha Hadid and Daniel Liebeskind. Genocide - Personal Stories, Big Questions will be published in autumn 2024. It covers 20th and 21st-century genocide, from the Namo and Herero in 1904 Southwest Africa to the Uighurs and Yazidis, looking at the 1915 Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, Rwanda, Cambodia, Srebrenica, and Indonesia. I have spoken with survivors and scholars to bring into focus the parallels each atrocity shares. Genocide is all around, and we need better ways of stopping it. My first book, Dispatches from the Kabul Café, is published by Advance Editions (2014). It’s a series of true stories gathered during my time reporting from Afghanistan from 2007-2011.
