Biography
I am a veteran journalist with more than 12 years experience as a newsroom leader and more than 20 years in the industry overall. My track record includes work across platforms: digital, television, radio and print. I have also taught journalism at the college level, both as a full-time faculty member and an adjunct. My current job is part of NPR's system of state and regional hubs. I worked in St. Louis while leading a team producing investigative journalism that centers the voices and stories of people in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. Previously, I worked from St. Louis with WFYI Public Media (Indianapolis) as project manager for grant-funded reporting on health and education. Before joining WFYI, I led a team of four reporters as editor for a coverage initiative on race, identity and culture called "Sharing America." This collaboration included four public radio stations: Connecticut Public Radio (Hartford), St. Louis Public Radio, KCUR (Kansas City), and OPB (Portland, OR). In June 2017, I wrapped up a few months as interim digital director at WEWS and News5Cleveland.com in Cleveland. Before that I had the opportunity to serve as Communications and Marketing Officer for Belize's National Institute of Culture and History (NICH). From March 2015 to May 2016, I led digital content strategy for the NBC affiliate (Scripps property) in Kansas City, Mo. In addition to overseeing editorial and social media operations, I led a team that collaborates closely with the broadcast staff in an integrated newsroom. Prior to that, as Community Editor at Scripps flagship WCPO-9 On Your Side in Cincinnati (2012-2015), my duties included social media strategy and implementation and online community news coverage using a team of contributors. Before moving to Cincinnati I spent about nine months as an independent journalist and consultant in St. Louis. Prior to that I was a regional editor for Patch.com in the metro St. Louis area. I joined Patch.com after more than four years on the Radio-Television faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Before that I was on the journalism faculty at Florida A&M University. I have been working in journalism since 1991, when I was hired as the first news director at Great Belize Television. "News 5" was the first independent television newscast to air in Belize. I took a two-year detour into public relations before heading for graduate school the mid-1990's. My first job after grad school was as a newscast producer at WFMJ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Youngstown, Ohio. From there I went to WTAE-TV(ABC) in Pittsburgh, also as a newscast producer. I switched gears to special projects producing in Cleveland at WOIO-TV (CBS) and later WDIV-TV (NBC) in Detroit.
