Biography

I'm a multimedia journalist at the Expositor in Brantford, Ont., assigned to the city hall beat. I blog about municipal politics, a habit I started while working at the Sentinel-Review in Woodstock, where I was stationed from 2003-11. I started his career working for the Woolwich Observer in Elmira, Ont. Over the years I've covered education, the police beat, amateur sports, agriculture and local councils big and small. I spent eight months on sabbatical in 2010-11 as the Gordon N. Fisher Canadian Journalism Fellow at Massey College / University of Toronto, where I audited teacher-education courses at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT), a course on urban form offered by the U of T's Cities Centre and smart-phone application design. I've received recognition for my work from the Ontario Newspaper Awards, the Canadian Association of Journalists and the U.S.-based Education Writers' Association. I'm currently president of the Canadian Association of Journalists and also sit on the National Newspaper Awards board of governors. In addition to my work at the Expositor, I also run an education blog where I touch on provincial developments in K-12 education. Outside of journalism, I've been a lifeguard, swimming instructor, first aid / CPR / AED instructor and leadership trainer for almost two decades. This has led to involvement in lifesaving sport, where I am a technical official volunteering at provincial, national and international competitions. I sit on the national sport organization as communications manager.
