  • Wombats live a solitary life - if they can avoid cars, drought, angry farmers and social influencers

By Ian Fraser Verified| RiotACT Verified In recent days, wombats have been in the news for the wrong reasons, but it’s not that it’s been their fault! There’s no need to revisit that sad and sorry saga with the social influencer, but it’s a good excuse to offer a column on these wonderful and often abused old Australians. By Ian Fraser Verified| RiotACT Verified Soon one of our noisier (non-human) annual visitors will be heading north for the winter and Canberra will be a quieter place for it. Noisy Friarbirds are large honeyeaters and yes, undeniably noisy. The best I can describe it in words is a sort of shrieking croaking gobble, though to be fair they do have a few more melodious chiming notes at times too. They were present and obvious in the Sydney colony right from its establishment and were among the first east coast birds to get an English name.
