Gritting my teeth, I sat down at my desk and tapped my keyboard furiously. The words flowed easily, but potential clients would need more than gibberish and boastful phrases. Smoke filled my nostrils, and I thought the blinking cursor skipping across the rapidly filling screen might melt the LED bulb highlighting my every word. To my dismay, I realized the odor was not bellowing from beneath my fingers, nor a materializing metaphor. Gasping for breath and wiping tears from their eyes, my children piled into the dining room shouting about a fire. I panicked, but only for a moment. With my wits returned, I closed my laptop, opened a window and announced, "Dinner is ready." As a staff writer for the local newspaper, I chase leads, regurgitate statistics and relentlessly hound sources for a single quote to tie my whole article together five minutes before deadline. But, my work seldom offers an opportunity to pursue my passion, narrative storytelling. Narratives permit me an opportunity to take a mundane task, such as filling out a bio box, and create a world of intrigue and excitement. By day, I churn out breaking news, previews, field reports, meeting coverage and investigative snippets about local government. By night, I don a cape, ignoring my children's snickering, as I dip my pen in the murky folds of the freelance void.
