With my wits returned, I closed my laptop, opened a window and announced, "Dinner is ready." As a staff writer for the local newspaper, I chase leads, regurgitate statistics and relentlessly hound sources for a single quote to tie my whole article together five minutes before deadline. But, my work seldom offers an opportunity to pursue my passion, narrative storytelling. Narratives permit me an opportunity to take a mundane task, such as filling out a bio box, and create a world of intrigue and excitement. By day, I churn out breaking news, previews, field reports, meeting coverage and investigative snippets about local government. By night, I don a cape, ignoring my children's snickering, as I dip my pen in the murky folds of the freelance void.
