Biography

Ilgin Yorulmaz is an author and freelance foreign correspondent, covering Middle East politics, gender, human rights and street culture in Turkey and abroad. Her stories have appeared in HuffPost, VICE, Guardian, Condé Nast Traveller UK, Vogue Turkey, and T24, Turkey’s only remaining independent digital newspaper. She also writes about religion and social justice for NGOs in UK and U.S. -- such as New York-based multi-faith platform called Voices -- and abroad, reporting from countries like India and Nepal. Ilgin grew up in Turkey, and lived and worked in Japan and UK. She holds a master’s degree from Columbia Journalism School, where she was a White House Correspondents Association Scholar, and became fellow-at-large of the inaugural Gendering Migration initiative by New Yorker staff writer Sarah Stillman. Last year, she was nationally chosen for the Fellowship in Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics, visiting former Nazi headquarters in Berlin and concentration camps in Poland to document atrocities against marginalized groups like Jews, homosexuals and gypsies. Ilgin founded and became the first president of Religion News Association chapter at Columbia. She also has a second master’s degree in International Relations from International University of Japan. Ilgin speaks fluent Turkish, French and Japanese.
