Biography

I read a lot of books as a teen. I loved to read H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Asimov, Arthur Conan Doyle, Ray Bradbury, also I read The Godfather Books 1 and 2, and a slew of other works, none academic. I did it because I liked it. I tested out of Concord High because the environment there is caustic. Violent students, and insults, and unchecked bullying. Someone had set fire to the wonderful library they'd had. After I got out of high school I got unskilled night work, and then I became schizophrenic and had to be on medication, and from then on people didn't attribute intelligence. And, much of the time I really was a fool. I became what everyone said I was. Finally, in the 1990's, I started to come out of that. I became computer literate and began web browsing and writing on a used PC. I decided I was good enough to compete as a writer, and why shouldn't I? Since then, I've worked at it. And worked and worked. I've generated a lot of garbage and some amount of good stuff. I sell books on LULU. I figured I didn't present well enough or have an adequate background to approach a literary agency.. LULU isn't much money, but it is the easiest most direct method of having a book published and potentially salable. The theme of my life is, someone who doesn't know what he's doing, but keeps trying anyway. Every possible mistake has been made and one hopes will not be made again. And I will keep trying...

  • Two decades of writing for Bay Area street newspapers

By Jack Bragen Verified, Bradley M. Penner| The Street Spirit Verified When I was young, in my twenties, I took pride in being able to get letters to the editor published. For a young adult with severe psychiatric illness, a letter to the editor in a paper is pretty good. But I wanted more. I really wanted to become a published writer. Periodically, I would submit stories to publications, and if you consider the level of the writing I produced back then, I stood little or no chance of getting something accepted. I married my wife when I was 31.

  • Post-election shock and it’s effect on one psychotic man

By Jack Bragen Verified, Bradley M. Penner| The Street Spirit Verified At a reasonable guess, most of the readers and writers of this publication are unhappy, to say the least, with Donald Trump returning to the White House. I am no exception. And with my psychiatric issues, I am not as able—as many people probably are—to be resilient and to come back to a normal space. I use the word “normal” meaning baseline and it is not a term used to exclude those who are normally different.

  • Neurodivergent people have limited options for supportive care

By Jack Bragen Verified, Bradley M. Penner| The Street Spirit Verified Yearsago, while I sat in a waiting room at a mental health clinic, I observed an old man who might have had dementia being brought in to get his shot of medication. He was grumpy and complaining at first, but said he felt better after the shot. It is plausible that the person administering it was to the man’s liking. It seems more doubtful to me that the medication, very likely a time-release oil compound injected into the muscle, would quickly make him feel noticeably better.
