Divided societies are often characterized by conflicting interests between people with different social identities that are represented in political parties pursuing conflicting goals (Devine & Robinson, 2014). In those polarized political contexts, perceived intergroup threat, the belief that a given outgroup is in some way harmful to one's ingroup (Schmid & Muldoon, 2015), is likely to emerge.
