Biography
I am an award-winning journalist with more than a dozen years experience writing/editing for a daily newspaper. I also have several years of experience as a freelancer, contributing articles on a variety of topics for print and digital publications. In my current role, I serve as a writer/editor for Red Oak Local, a marketing agency that manages several travel/tourism websites: Awesome Mitten, Rooted in Ohio, Rooted Wanderings, Smoky Mountain Wanderings, and VisitMaine. From August 2010 to October 2023, I worked for The Alpena News, a six-day-a-week daily newspaper in Alpena Michigan. I served in several capacities in the newsroom, starting as a sports writer then serving as sports editor, and finally serving as assistant managing editor. In those roles, I pitched, wrote, and edited stories, helped maintain reporter budgets, oversaw the layout of the paper, and handled various other newsroom tasks. I received multiple awards for my writing and assisted in the production of different newsroom projects which also won several awards.

By James Andersen Verified| Tasting Table Verified Everyone loves a good origin story, especially when it comes to food. The birthplace of the hamburger remains a heated (albeit tasty) debate, while Buffalo, New York serves as the setting for the iconic pairing of pizza and chicken wings. The MoonPie, which dates to 1917, has a similarly tasty beginning, and it may be the best story you read today. The tale begins in Kentucky and involves Chattanooga Bakery, a traveling salesman named Earl Mitchell, and a hungry coal miner.
By James Andersen Verified| Tasting Table Verified For all their culinary prowess, even celebrity chefs know when not to fight a losing battle in the kitchen. Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond is no different. Even though her repertoire includes plenty of kitchen secrets and a recipe list full of cakes, brownies, and cobblers, green tea ice cream is one sweet treat she prefers to get from the store.
By James Andersen Verified| Tasting Table Verified Since its invention by New York bartender John O'Connor in 1901, the dirty martini has remained a popular drink order for those who enjoy cocktails on the savory side. The pairing of olive juice with vodka goes like a hand in a glove, creating a drink that's salty, savory, and cloudy — with olives included for garnish, of course.
