Biography
James Ron is a research consultant whose experience in academia, journalism, public opinion analysis, program evaluation, and war crimes investigations has taken him to multiple world regions and countries. He began his career as a journalist with the Associated Press in Jerusalem, where he reported on Israeli politics and policy, including towards Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. After earning a BA in political science from Stanford University, he transitioned to working as a consultant for Human Rights Watch, first on human rights violations in the Palestinian territories and then in Nigeria, Turkey, Kosovo, Chechnya, and Kyrgyzstan. Armed with a Ph.D. in sociology from UC Berkeley, he published scholarly articles and a book on political violence in Bosnia, Israel/Palestine, Peru, the Republic of Congo, and Serbia. James then studied the statistical correlates of human rights reporting worldwide, building and analyzing large datasets from the publications of Amnesty International, the Economist, and Newsweek. In later research, he studied government restrictions on NGOs in Ethiopia and elsewhere, building, with others, a global dataset on state regulations of foreign aid to civil society. He ended his academic career with a series of opinion polls on public attitudes toward human rights organizations, principles, and policies in Colombia, India, Mexico, Morocco, and Nigeria. James Ron now works as a private research consultant based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Over the last few years, his clients have included a rare disease market research company, US philanthropies and nonprofits, European development assistance programs, and Middle Eastern news organizations. For over 30 years, he has often worked with nonprofits and charitable organizations as a volunteer. In the early 1990s, he volunteered with B’Ts elem, an Israeli rights group, where he helped edit human rights reports. He later worked for many years with Human Rights Watch, first as a paid consultant and then as a volunteer. He also consulted for the International Committee of the Red Cross and CARE, both humanitarian aid groups. After his son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age two, James began performing volunteer site visits and program evaluations for Life for a Child, an Australian medical charity that supplies insulin and blood glucose test equipment to over 46,000 children in low and middle-income countries. His work for children with diabetes has taken him to India, Mexico, Morocco, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. In Mexico, he helped jump-start a Life for a Child program with the Mexican Diabetes Federation, which now supports over 1,200 children. In 2023, he returned to Mexico on Life for a Child’s behalf to help local partners, including the Jalisco Diabetes Association, locate additional children with Type 1 diabetes.
