Jan Schroder is an Atlanta-based travel writer, journalist and editor-in-chief of The Travel 100, a publication of The 100 Companies. Her stories also appear in The Atlanta 100 and the 23 other publications of The 100 Companies, which have a combined monthly circulation of more than 1.1 million in the U.S. She is an award-winning writer and editor, author of several books and produces a monthly radio segment for the iHeart radio show Speaking of Travel. Her travel writing has also appeared in Atlanta Intown, Global Traveler, Fodor’s, Orbitz, DeSoto magazine and Simply Buckhead. By Jan Schroder| TheTravel100@ 2 Walking a mile can be easy. Walking a mile with a suitcase or if you are on crutches or in a wheelchair? That’s not always so easy, especially if you encounter sets of stairs. Google Maps has a way for you to avoid stairs when walking. Open the app and put in your location and select the walking option. Then click on the three dots on the top right and select 0ptions at the bottom. Under trip options, select wheelchair accessible, which allows you to avoid stairs and prefer elevators.

I stayed in a hotel in NYC where we were supplied earplugs to drown out the noise of the rooftop bar, which were only partially effective. I travel with this portable noise machine, the LectroFan Micro2, which is just over 2″ tall and features a Bluetooth enabled speaker. I have my choice of 11 sounds: five fans, four white noise and two ocean surf, my favorites.
