Biography

Against all odds at midlife, I posted a personals ad without lying about my age and met the love of my life in FAO Schwarz. https://www.jweekly.com/2020/03/13/a-match-made-in-newsprint-20-years-later/That and other stories about my search and remarriage make up "Love Atop a Keyboard: A Memoir of Late-Life Love" (Mascot Books). Order it on Amazon and Bookshop.org. Read more on my website: janetsilverghent.com Born in New York, where my father was an executive at Viking Press, I grew up in a houseful of books and was determined to write them. My father showed one of my poems to Steinbeck’s editor. He was not impressed. But I persisted. I graduated cum laude from Oberlin, spent junior year at University of Glasgow, and earned a master’s at University of Michigan. Former fashion editor at the Contra Costa Times and fashion and features writer at the Oakland Tribune, winning national awards at both. Retired senior editor and current columnist at J. the Jewish News of Northern California. Freelance arts and entertainment writer at the Palo Alto Weekly and copyeditor at Ten Speed Press. Member of Congregation Beth Am, Palo Alto Jewish Community Center, three community choirs, and an interfaith group. Active in Oberlin Alumni Association. I live in Northern California with my husband, an engineer-inventor. Between us, we have four children and eight grandchildren. Interests include singing in three chorales, world travel, gardening, and cooking. I call myself a haphazard gourmet who grows her own herbs, makes her own bone broth, and creates chaos in the kitchen.
