Biography

Currently working as Consulting Editor for a new long-form news website The Secretariat - thesecretariat.in, helping manage a team of about 10 full time editors/journalists and economists. Till December last year (2023), I was working with the Press Trust of India as Act. Resident Editor of the national news agency’s Eastern India network, based in Kolkata. I have earlier worked for the United News of India (Sub-Editor -- 1986-1988), Macmillan India Ltd (Commissioning Editor -- 1989-1992), The Pioneer (Sr Correspondent --1992-1995) and The Telegraph (Starting as Principal Correspondent ending up as Senior Editor-Business -- January 1995 - till March 2019) and The New Indian Express (Business Editor -- April 2019- 28 February 2021). On occasion, I have also written for the Businessworld, Yojana, 'Desh' (Bengali magazine of the ABP group) and the London-based Asian Affairs magazine. I currently also write Op-ed coloumn for The Free Press Journal, Mumbai and for Bangladesh Pratidin (Dhaka). An Economics Graduate from Delhi University, I was a Chevening Fellow (awarded by the British Government) in Development Economics at the University of Bradford, UK. I have frequently appeared as an expert analyst on television and radio shows, including All India Radio's Market Mantra programme. I am also Honorary Secretary of the Commonwealth Journalists' Association, an international body of Journalists, accredited to the Commonwealth Secretariat.
