The American Library Association (ALA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1876 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. As the oldest and largest library association in the world, the ALA is dedicated to enhancing library and information services and supporting the profession of librarianship. Its mission includes promoting free access to information and advocating for the First Amendment rights related to libraries and their patrons. The ALA provides a variety of services to its members and the library community.
