Biography

Jeff is a nationally recognized journalist with an accomplished career for more than 15 years, most recently as a senior investigative reporter with KOMO TV (ABC) Seattle. He is currently a Scripps Journalism Fellow at the University of Colorado's Center for Environmental Journalism. He’s a Seattle native and a graduate of Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communications. Jeff has worked as a reporter, anchor, segment producer and Executive Producer at stations in Seattle, Kansas City, Spokane, Boston and Miami. His investigations, half hour specials and daily news reporting have earned more than 20 journalism awards including a national Investigative Reporters and Editors award, a national Clarion award, a National Press Club award, two national nominations for the Humane Society’s Genesis Awards, two nominations for a national investigative reporting Emmy by virtue of winning at a regional level, ten individual regional Emmy’s and statewide Associated Press “Best of Show” reporting awards. Jeff is the immediate past President of a major American journalism association, the Society of Environmental Journalists, the world’s leading such group of professional reporters whose members have earned every major journalism award including Pulitzer Prizes. He also serves on the SEJ Board of Directors which guides a $1 million annual budget, engages with its more than 1300 members, remains fully informed on all major issues and experts, and chaired SEJ’s most attended annual conference drawing attendees from 44 states and 23 nations. He’s done groundbreaking reporting on corruption, animal protection, politics, environmental issues and white supremacy groups. His reporting has helped change in state laws, close unscrupulous businesses, fuel Supreme Court arguments and White House policy, and put more than a dozen people behind bars. He has advanced experience with under cover and hidden camera investigations, and is well versed on media law and has helped train other reporters. He has twice served as Executive Producer, at KSHB Kansas City and KSTW Seattle, effectively leading day-to-day management of those newsrooms. During a multi-year break from journalism, Jeff focused on public affairs work in politics, media coaching, and media production. Jeff continues to periodically travel around the hemisphere to train scientists and others how to more effectively communicate to the public and to the press. He’s a speaker and moderator on journalism and related issues. He’s been awarded five “working” journalism fellowships including the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Transatlantic Reporters Network in Europe (Berlin, Oslo, Hamburg, Barcelona), the Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at USC Annenberg, Carnegie Mellon’s Steinbrenner Institute, Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism, and the Metcalf Institute. He’s been a panelist for many years for the Aldo Leopold Leadership Seminars for leading scientists, Pew Marine Fellow int’l conferences, and other media confabs. Jeff’s journalism career has taken him to Bali, Norway’s Arctic Circle, Panamanian jungles, throughout the Caribbean, Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg, Canada, and Hawaii while examining issues like climate change, wildlife trafficking, sustainability, and ocean issues. Jeff was the first reporter to broadcast live from inside Aquarius, the world’s only undersea research lab, on the bottom of the ocean nine miles off Key Largo. While inside a research submarine, Jeff also plunged to the bottom of the Atlantic inside a research submarine for a story on biomedical research of amazing medical properties of deepsea sponges.
