With stunning landscapes, delicious food and beautifully preserved rock churches, it’s easy to see why Matera was named a European Capital of Culture back in 2019 – a big turnaround for a city once known, in the 1950s, as a national embarrassment. The old city is quickly becoming the place to visit in southern Italy.
