Biography

I've been working across the fields of journalism and equalities for over three decades, specialising first and foremost in film. My disability prevented me getting NCTJ qualified (I can't physically use shorthand) but I have extensive experience, as well as masters degrees in English and Sociology & Research Methods. I have additional training in science, medicine and working with statistics. I have a strong network of contacts, especially within the film industry and the third sector, along with expertise in delivering training to journalists in equalities and human rights issues. I am an active member of the NUJ and the Online Film Critics' Society, as well as being a CherryPicks and Tomatometer registered critic. I routinely work with major international film festivals and cover awards events including the Oscars. As inclusivity coordinator at the Bylines Network, I aim to build alternative routes into journalism for people from under-represented groups, and to broaden and diversify the public conversation. I am particularly concerned with ensuring that minoritised groups which are frequently talked about by others in the media have a voice of their own. My published books include Transgender Employees in the Workplace; Supporting Trans and Non-binary People with Disabilities and Illnesses; and Growing Older as a Trans and/or Non-binary Person. I have also worked on a number of short films, primarily as a writer but also as a director, producer and, occasionally, actor. I am a regular participant in the 48 Hour Film Festival, working with teams in Scotland and Colorado.
