An elderly woman stood before me, eyes pleading. “I dropped my stick,” she said, her gaze steady yet fragile. “Oh yes, sorry,” I mumbled, rushing forward to pick it up. “Thanks, love. I won’t get very far without it.”I gave a small, polite smile and carried on with my walk, my pug Walter waddling beside me.

I had been trapped in the angry stage of grief, and my inner teenager ablaze with fury. Again and again, I came close to self-destruction, but my wonderful therapist stood by me, unwavering. She understood that I needed someone to hold space for me so that part of me felt safe enough to sit with the despair—the unbearable unfairness of it all.
