Company Info

Rio Grande Sun

The Rio Grande Sun, established in 1956 by the late Robert and Ruth Trapp and their partners Bill and Hollie Birkett, has grown from a small weekly publication to the largest paid weekly newspaper in New Mexico. Today, we continue our unwavering service to the Española Valley and north central New Mexico, providing comprehensive coverage of local politics, crime, school news, county events, editorials, and sports. In April of 2022 the newspaper was purchased by a diverse group of New Mexico investors under the leadership of Harvey A. Yates., of Albuquerque, and under the direction of El Rito Media, LLC. In the spring of 2023, El Rito Media purchased the Artesia Daily Press in Artesia, N.M. El Rito is dedicated to saving community newspapers and in offering comprehensive news coverage and wide-spread and differing opinions from varying writers and columnists The company continues to honor a legacy built on fearless journalism and a relentless pursuit of transparency. Their legacy of fighting for openness in all levels of government continues to influence our journalistic approach. The reach of the Rio Grande Sun extends well beyond Española, with our strong readership spanning from Santa Fe County to the Colorado border and the village of Chama. Our paid circulation of 6,000, primarily distributed through street vendors, in-store sales, and mail subscriptions, brings our stories to thousands of households each week. Questions?
