Biography
After a stint as a music publicist in London, Jenny Valentish found work as an editor at a crime fiction publishing company, and as a staff writer, then features editor at IPC Media. Random points of her London writing career include a weekly techie column for the NME (want to sound like Franz Ferdinand in 'Take Me Out'? No problem); writing Jenna Jameson's column while working at Paul Raymond’s Soho empire; a column for Jamie Hewlett's Tank Girl mag; and moonlighting with record labels to create album bios. Upon defecting to Australia in 2006, she first worked as a chief sub-editor at ACP's Ralph, then edited Triple J's Jmag for four years, taking the magazine from a quarterly to a monthly. Next, she launched Time Out's Melbourne edition, editing the print mag, website, EDMs and guides for four years. Now freelance, she writes for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Monthly, The Guardian Aus/UK, The Monthly the ABC and The Saturday Paper. She has had short-term contracts as a sub-editor for Broadsheet, the Australian Drug Foundation, Dolly, Cleo and Street Machine, and as a deputy editor for the ABC's one-shot Rage magazine. On the book front, she co-edited the 2009 anthology Your Mother Would Be Proud, with contributions from Tim Rogers, Jimmy Barnes, Julia Zemiro, The Chaser + more. Her first novel, Cherry Bomb, was published by Allen and Unwin in 2014 and is a teenage psychodrama set in the music industry. Her first non-fiction book, Woman of Substances: A Journey Into Addiction and Treatment, was published in Australia in 2017 and in the UK/US in 2018 and made it onto university reading lists. She has since become a board director of SMART Recovery and a consultant for the National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre and has been a keynote speaker at many drug conferences in Australia and New Zealand. Her latest book for Black Inc, Everything Harder Than Everyone Else, explores the fine line between endurance and hedonism.
