Biography
I'm an experienced journalist and researcher based in the U.S. Midwest. I love to find and tell vivid, thoughtful stories about the mystery and curiosity of lost and overlooked people, places and things. I've climbed a mountain to look for a mummy cave. I've been threatened with a lawsuit by a Hells Angels biker. I once got booted from an interview of Donald Trump (he told his people, 'this won't be a good one,' after a question he didn't like). I annoyed Barack Obama when I interviewed him, too, after I told him what my parents doubted about him. I've studied Arabic in Egypt and helped train women journalists in Yemen, where I took a different way home every day to lower the risk of getting kidnapped. While I mainly work in the written word, I’m also learning about audio journalism and podcasting, where I’ve co-produced a season of the Dakota Spotlight investigative series. I've got experience on the other end of the microphone and camera as well, having done TV hits and radio interviews for local, national and international radio and TV. Currently: I'm a remote-working journalist in Minnesota. I’m editor of The Vault for Forum Communications Co., a project that creates investigative reporting and deeply reported series about history, mystery and true crime. I’m also a contributing and special series editor for Diplomatic Courier, working to elevate unique voices in global affairs, and I’m working on a narrative-nonfiction history book about the fascinating federal judges of North Dakota.
