No one was more surprised than me, when, over the course of several years, newspapers and magazines from all across the Midwest began contacting me and wanting to publish my bit of humor, and actually pay me for it.

They had both grown up on farms and, as my dad once said, “We had plenty of milk, meat and eggs to sell, but no one had any money to buy.” I believed them when they explained that they knew what it was like to be poor. Being raised in an era when everyone had to do without is probably why they lived their lives as frugally as possible. I’ve written before, my parents never throwing anything away.
