Swimming competitively in both middle and high school and his love for the sport followed him into his adult life. He jokingly states he continued because he likes to eat (a lot) and swimming helps justify the extra calories. But all kidding aside, he maintains an enjoyment of swimming for the purpose of competing in destination races, in particular triathlons.

As a high school student, our class was given an assignment to write our own obituaries. I didn’t fully understand it back then, but I came to realize it was an exercise to see what we hoped to accomplish in life. I had no idea why, but I saw myself as a newspaper columnist. I didn’t have a burning desire to pursue a writing career. My first inclination was to go to law school.
