This comes to us from the Naval History and Heritage Command. “SS” means “steamship,” a ship that has no sails and moves forward using a steam engine. RMS, as in RMS Titanic, that means Royal Mail Steamer. The Titanic may have carried up to nine million pieces of mail on its one and only voyage.

It means something is very hot or boiling hot. How did the “piping” get in there? Put a tea kettle on to boil, and soon the steam from the stem or “pipe” of the kettle rushes out with a whistling sound, almost like musical pipes. Piping hot is very old. It goes back to the days of poet Geoffrey Chaucer. He used it to describe hot food in The Miller’s Tale in 1390.
