Biography
Jinghua Qian is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in ABC, SBS, The Guardian, Sydney Morning Herald, HuffPost, MTV and more. As a reporter and later Head of News at English-language media outlet Sixth Tone from 2016 to 2018, Jinghua shaped the publication's influential coverage of contemporary China. After returning to Australia, Jinghua was the reviews editor and feature writer at ArtsHub before turning to freelancing full-time. Jinghua's work has been recognised by the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards with an Honourable Mention in 2017 as a writer and in 2018 as an editor. In 2020, ey was the inaugural fellow for Liminal magazine and Hyphenated Projects's writing residency, and has been shortlisted for The Australia Institute's 2020 writing residency. Jinghua has also produced audio stories and podcasts including Underfoot, four multimedia tours uncovering Footscray's underground history, and We Weren't Born Yesterday, a multilingual series exploring Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian and Arab LGBTIQ communities in Australia. Ey was also a broadcaster with 3CR Community Radio's Queering the Air from 2012-2015. Jinghua is on the board of Peril, a magazine for Asian-Australian writing, arts and culture, and sits on the arts ambassador committee for Maribyrnong City Council.
