Joe Plenzler is a communication strategist and public relations professional with two decades of experience in the industry. He is a U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also served as the senior U.S. military spokesman in Indonesia during the disaster assistance mission in response to the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that killed more than 100,000 people in the Banda Aceh region. In 2002-03, he served as the public affairs officer to then Major General James N. Mattis, USMC (ret.) during the invasion of Iraq where he planned and executed the largest single-unit media embed program in Marine Corps history. From 2010-15, he served in the Pentagon as the press secretary, spokesman, and staff group director for the 34th, 35th, and 36th Commandants of the Marine Corps. Since leaving active duty, he has served as an executive vice president of membership and marketing and director of media relations for two national-level nonprofit organizations. He is also a backcountry expert and frequently reviews outdoor equipment.
