By Joe Randleman Verified| Ames Tribune@ On April 12 Edyn Cowles got a little emotional when her Ames girls track and field teammate Sophia Hatcher broke the school record in the high school girls long jump at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Hatcher jumped 18 feet, 9 inches to break the old mark of 18-5 set by Kersten Thorgaard back in 2004. Hatcher got up from the turf, then bent over and gave a facial expression of disbelief when she heard the news. Cowles soon greeted her triumphant teammate with her trademark smile and some hugs.

The game was tied at 2-2 through two overtimes and headed into a shootout to determine the state championship. Harswick, a freshman at the time, anxiously awaited the penalty kick attempt by then-sophomore Connor Rash.
