Biography
John Counts is the investigations editor for MLive. He got his start at weeklies in suburban Detroit before becoming a crime reporter in Northern Michigan. He came to Ann Arbor in 2012 to cover the police and court beat in Washtenaw County. His reporting on a scandal involving a district court judge prompted the judge to step down from the bench. He has also investigated drug thefts at local hospitals and how mentally ill defendants aren't getting speedy trials. Counts has won numerous state and national awards over the years, including for his work covering the Flint water crisis. He was an editor at The Flint Journal and The Ann Arbor News prior to heading up the investigative reporting team at MLive. He has a bachelor's degree in English from Wayne State University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia College Chicago. He's published fiction and essays in a variety of publications and literary journals over the years. His debut short story collection, "Bear County, Michigan," will be published by Northwestern University Press in 2025. He can be reached at johncounts@mlive.com.
