The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) fear a mass exodus from the force due to a spike in retirements expected over the coming years. As it stands, there are currently just over 14,000 sworn members in the force and the Government has pledged to recruit 5,000 more over the course of their tenure. But AGSI insists that it is simply not possible because of the recruitment crisis.

Jim O'Callaghan was fully briefed on the case by senior investigators at Castleisland Garda Station in Kerry. Sheep farmer Gaine, 56, vanished on March 20 from Kenmare, Co Kerry, and there has been no communication from him, nor any reported sightings anywhere since.
