ORR reports that a total of 420 million journeys were made by rail passengers in Great Britain in the latest quarter (1 April to 30 June 2024). This is a 7% increase on the 392 million journeys in the same quarter in the previous year (April to June 2023).

That’s a very big number and if they were all parked up together would cover almost 80% of the Isle of Wight. But there are other equally interesting deductions to be made about the significance of this fleet – eg who owns and drives them, and how is the UK car parc changing as we move towards decarbonising our economy?
