Biography
I have been a journalist, foreign correspondent, writer and editor for more than 40 years. I ran Reuters East Africa bureau during the wild 1990s and was Africa correspondent for The Times of London from 2002-14. From the field, I reported on the ill-fated US intervention in Somalia (Black Hawk Down), the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the ‘Blood Diamond’ wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia, the Balkan civil wars, and Nelson Mandela’s liberation in post-apartheid South Africa and figured in several books concerning those events. More recentIy, I reported on the 2015 refugee influx into Europe and directed coverage of the first-ever team of refugees to compete in the Rio Olympics in 2016 on behalf of the UN Refugee Agency. I was founding Editor in Chief of the award-winning humanitarian information service, the New Humanitarian and recently set up a new reporting network focusing on emerging Jihadist and other threats to Africa. I have also advised several private sector companies, think tanks, NGOs, governments and UN organisations on their media strategies. I am a passionate environmentalist and involved in several conservation projects around the world.

By Hassan-kafi Mohamed, Jonathan Clayton| The National Verified Somali pirates with links to Al Qaeda have released the Bangladesh-flagged cargo ship MV Abdullah and its 23 crew members after receiving a ransom payment of $5 million, locals and officials in Somalia said on Sunday. The payment followed weeks of secret negotiations with the ship’s owners, Kabir Steel Re-Rolling Mills, and is the first to be made to pirates operating off Somalia since they became active again recently following a years-long lull in attacks.
By Jonathan Clayton| The National Verified Somalia's Inter-State football final is set to go ahead on Monday, having been postponed out of fears militant group Al Shabab would carry out a suicide bombing at the 65,000 seater Mogadishu stadium, security sources told The National. “Al Shabab were planning to deploy suicide bombers disguised as fans to blow themselves up among the crowd. This is why the match was postponed today,” the source said on Sunday. The Somalia Football Federation has not given a reason for the postponement.
By Hassan-kafi Mohamed, Jonathan Clayton| The National Verified Somalia's Al Shabab militant group fired a mortar at the presidential palace in Mogadishu on Wednesday, showing its continued threat on land as it seeks to profit from a resurgence in piracy off the country's coast. One woman was killed when the mortar shell went astray and hit a shanty home a few blocks away. The attack shows that the militant group affiliated to Al Qaeda is far from defeated, despite Somalia's internationally backed government inflicting a string of recent defeats on it.
