What happens when home is two places? For Jose Fermoso, who was born in Oakland but bred partly in Mexico, it sounds a little romantic and hella fun. The fall and spring months were replete with family fiestas, stories, and the crush-inducing heroines of Televisa. The rest of the year he spent in Oakland, watching A’s games and eating Loard’s ice cream, scrambling over the rocks of America’s national parks. When the family moved back to the U.S. for good, Jose nursed his love of stories through newspapers like The Oakland Tribune. His fascination with language stuck through to Berkeley, where he majored in Rhetoric (“It’s sociological theory! Kind of!” his mom explains). Jose found his way to journalism by copy editing Windows Vista Magazine, a well-respected publication focused entirely on the most reviled software of the century. Happily, Jose moved on — to Wired.com, where he covered the latest business and consumer tech, developed the company’s Product Reviews site, and was a co-host of the popular Wired Gadget Lab podcasts. He also learned how to blog with extreme brevity from his boss, Tiny Words bard Dylan Tweney. Later, Jose worked as a reporter on the unauthorized biography of Jony Ive, along with author Leander Kahney — it became a New York Times bestseller — and the Silicon Valley Business Journal as a reporter on the Internet of Things and green tech beats. Still, he’s got a big place in his heart for novels. His favorite is Cervantes‘ Don Quijote de La Mancha, which he has read in Spanish and English. His second-favorite is either The Brothers Karamazov or Calvin and Hobbes’ Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons.
